Three Districts Where Hotels Get it Right

Marina Bay and City Hall

This district has the highest concentration of accessible hotels in Singapore, served by step free MRT stations at City Hall, Raffles Place and Bayfront. Marina Bay Sands has 25 accessible rooms with 900 mm door widths and a 1500 mm diameter bathroom turning circle, published on their 2023 accessibility guide. The downside: room rates start in the upscale bracket, SGD 350 to 700 a night. Pan Pacific Singapore publishes its accessible room dimensions: 850 mm door width and a bathroom that measures 1800 mm by 2000 mm. That is 300 mm larger on each side than the code minimum. You can actually turn a wheelchair. The tradeoff is location: Pan Pacific sits at Marina Square, a 7 minute walk through a shopping mall to the nearest MTR entrance. Budget for that extra time. Holiday Inn Express Singapore Clarke Quay, in the mid range bracket of SGD 150 to 350 a night, publishes a 900 mm door width and a 1500 mm by 1500 mm roll in shower. Every Holiday Inn Express property in Singapore has accessible rooms as standard per their 2024 chain policy. The downside: Clarke Quay is nightlife central. Noise on weekend evenings is real.

Orchard Road

Orchard has the second highest concentration of accessible hotels, served by step free MRT stations at Orchard, Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut. The upscale options here are chain properties that follow BCA code but rarely publish their room dimensions. Phone ahead with the specific questions: door width in millimetres at 90 degrees, roll in shower with zero threshold and its length and width, and whether a visual fire alarm strobe exists in the room. Many Orchard properties have exactly one accessible room. Book it 8 to 12 weeks ahead. The downside: Orchard hotels sit on a hill. The accessible route from the MRT station to the hotel entrance may include a slope. Ask about gradient.

The Civic District and Bugis

Bugis and Bras Basah have the third highest concentration of accessible hotels, with step free MRT at Bugis, Bras Basah and Bencoolen. The Raffles Hotel has two accessible suites as of 2024. They sit in the luxury bracket at SGD 700 plus per night. The bathroom dimensions are not published. Call and ask about roll in shower dimensions. The downside: Raffles is a historic building. The accessible route from the main entrance to the suite may involve a longer corridor than a modern tower hotel. The Fullerton Hotel, also in the luxury bracket, does not publish accessible room dimensions either. Phone question: Is there at least 900 mm of clear space on one side of the bed for a lateral transfer? If the hotel cannot give you a number in millimetres, it is a compliance room, not a comfort room.

What to Skip and What to Ask

Skip These Properties Entirely

Shophouse conversions like Hotel 1929 on Keong Saik Road, Naumi Liora also on Keong Saik Road, and The Sultan on Jalan Sultan are not viable options. They have a 150 to 300 mm step from the five foot way into the building, internal staircases with 200 to 250 mm risers and 800 to 900 mm width, and no lift. Fewer than five shophouse conversion properties have ground floor accessible rooms as of 2024, and none are confirmed step free. Skip them entirely unless you only need a ground floor room with no bathroom access requirements. Budget accessible chains like Hotel 81, Fragrance Hotel and ibis budget operate in the SGD 80 to 150 range. The ibis budget Singapore Gold has confirmed accessible rooms as of 2024. The downside: budget properties meet code minimums exactly, which means a 1500 mm by 1500 mm bathroom that is tight.

Getting Around

The accessible taxi fleet in Singapore numbers 1,200 wheelchair accessible taxis as of 2024, bookable through GrabAssist, ComfortDelGro CDG Zig and SMRT Taxis with a 30 to 60 minute average wait. Use them. Do not rely on hotel shuttle buses without calling first. Ask: Is the hotel shuttle bus wheelchair accessible with a ramp or lift, and what are the interior clear dimensions in millimetres? Most shuttles are not.
